MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team was in action Saturday (Oct. 6) afternoon as they hosted Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) opponent Heidelberg University. The Student Princes defeated the Pioneers, 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-16).
The first set saw Heidelberg grab a 3-1 edge early, but Marietta responded to take an 11-8 lead, which forced a Student Prince's timeout. The run was sparked by kills from
Hunter Barnes (Duncan Falls, Ohio/Philo),
Sam Ritenour (Jeffersonville, Ohio/Miami Trace), and
Grace Haas (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta). Heidelberg was able to regain an advantage and won the first set, 25-17.
The second set was back and forth early, as the match was tied three times, and the match remained tied at 3-3. The Student Princes were able to take 10-5 edge which forced a Marietta timeout. Out of the timeout, the Pioneers rallied to cut the lead to 12-10. The Marietta spark was provided by three straight kills from
Alissa Ginther (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye). Heidelberg was able to maintain its advantage and won the second set, 25-17.
The third set started as a hard fought battle as the match was tied four times, and remained tied at 10 points apiece. The Pioneers offense was led by
Amanda Arrowood (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Groveport Madison) as she had a kill early in the third set. The Student Princes were able to take a lead late in the third and final set, and won 25-16.
Marietta's offense was led by Arrowood as she had eight kills and a pair of block assists in the match. Ritenour added seven kills and two block assists in the match.
Defensively, the Pioneers were led by
Abbi Thompson (Commercial Point, Ohio/Teays Valley) as she had 10 digs in the match.
April Davis (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) pitched in defensively with eight digs.
Marietta will return to the court Tuesday (Oct. 9) when they travel to take on OAC opponent Capital University, with the match scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
