MARIETTA, Ohio — Heidelberg University scored three unanswered goals to come from behind and defeat Marietta College by the score of 3-2 Saturday (Oct. 6) evening in men's soccer action. The loss drops Marietta to 6-6 overall and 0-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Heidelberg improves to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in the OAC.
Early on it looked like the Pioneers were going to blow out Heidelberg. Marietta scored twice in the first eight minutes of the match.
Andy Rolfes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) tallied his third goal of the season off and assist from
Tom Sloan (Stockport, England/Wilmslow) at the 6:46 mark.
Marietta converted a set piece less than two minutes later.
Cole Pappas (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) sent a corner kick into the box where
Robert Phillips (Elkins, W.Va./Aquinas Academy (Pa.)) was waiting to head it in for a 2-0 Pioneer lead. The goal was the sixth of the season for Phillips.
The Pioneers let the momentum swing back to Heidelberg right before halftime. With just eight seconds left in the first half, Marietta was whistled for a foul in the box giving the Student Princes a penalty kick. Kyle Morton converted the penalty cutting the MC lead in half, 2-1.
Heidelberg leveled the match in the 79th minute. Antonio Demonte found himself open at the top of the box and fired a shot inside the left post for his first goal of the season.
After scoring with seconds left in the first half, the Student Princes managed a repeat performance in the second half. Cory Gilbert crossed the ball into the 6-yard box to Demonte who put the ball in the back of the net for the game winner.
Dakota Penquite (Blanchester, Ohio/Blanchester) had four saves in goal for the Pioneers, while Jake Kress posted seven for the Student Princes.
Marietta outshot the Student Princes, 16-11, including a slim 9-7 edge in shots on goal. The Pioneers took seven corner kicks in the match to none for Heidelberg.
Marietta travels to Columbus on Wednesday (Oct. 10) for a 7 p.m. match at capital University.
