Volleyball opens OAC Tournament at Ohio Northern

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College volleyball team is seeded eighth in the Ohio Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament and plays at top seeded Ohio Northern University Tuesday (Oct. 30) at 7 p.m.

The Pioneers went 11-19 overall and 2-7 in the OAC during the regular season. Ohio Northern finished 19-7 overall and 8-1 in conference matches tying Otterbein for the first place. The Polar Bears earned the No. 1 seed by virtue of their 3-1 win over the Cardinals.

Ohio Northern swept the Pioneers, 3-0, earlier this season at the ONU Sports Center. The Polar Bears posted set scores of 25-13, 25-11, and 25-12 in the victory.

Tuesday's other first round matches include No. 7 John Carroll (2-7 OAC) at No. 2 Otterbein (8-1 OAC), No. 6 Mount Union (5-4 OAC) at No. 3 Muskingum (7-2 OAC), and No. 5 Heidelberg (5-4 OAC) at No. 4 Baldwin Wallace (6-3 OAC).

The winners advance to the semifinals on Thursday at the higher seeds. The championship is set for Saturday at the highest remaining seed.

Junior outside hitter Hunter Barnes (Duncan Falls, Ohio/Philo) and sophomore middle blocker Sam Ritenour (Jeffersonville, Ohio/Miami Trace) lead the Pioneers attack. Barnes averages 2.22 kills per set, while Ritenour averages 1.87 kills.

Marietta's setter this season is Maddie Nader (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion).   Nader dished out a total of 470 total assists, which is 4.80 assists per set.  Nader also led the Pioneers in service aces with 30 on the year.   

Sophomore April Davis (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) is the Marietta libero and leads the team with 4.36 digs per set. Freshman Braya Elsea (Circleville, Ohio/Logan Elm) adds 2.55 digs per set.

At the net, middle blockers Brooke Trimble (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay), Amanda Arrowood (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Groveport Madison), and Ritenour are Marietta's leading blocker. Trimble, a freshman, averages a team-best 0.86 blocks. Arrowood and Ritenour average 0.80 and 0.70, respectively.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for senior citizens (62 years and older) and $3 for non-OAC students. OAC students with a valid school ID are admitted free of charge.
