Men's Rowing dominates Muskie Chase

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's rowing team had a dominating showing in the Muskie Chase Saturday (Oct. 27) afternoon on the Muskingum River. The crews competed in a 6,000-meter race and two 500-meter sprints.

"All of our crews raced very aggressively, which was a goal for the day, Marietta head coach Philip Schmehl said. "We are pleased that we achieved that goal but have some speed to gain through training, technique, and selection."

The Pioneer varsity 8+ shell won the 6K race with a time of 19:25.6. Adrian (20:06.0) was second, followed by Case Western (20:23.5), Marietta's 3V (20:32.6) and Marietta's 2V (20:59.4).

In the varsity 4+ race, the Pioneers out dueled Adrian. Marietta crossed in 24:01.5 with Adrian finishing in 24:31.9.

The varsity 8+ crew won both 500-meter sprints. In the first sprint the Pioneers posted a time of 1:12.7, followed by Adrian (1:13.8) and Case Western (1:16.3).

The second sprint saw the same order of finish with Marietta (1:11.3), Adrian (1:12.4) and Case Western (1:14.8).

Marietta's 3V shell beat the MC 2V and Cincinnati in both sprints. The first race saw the 3V crew posting a time of 1:16.9, with the 2V (1:17.8) and Cincinnati (1:24.7) rounding out the field. In the second sprint the 3V crossed in 1:16.8, followed by the 2V (1:17.6) and Cincinnati (1:24.8).

Marietta and Adrian split the varsity 4+ sprints. Adrian won the first with a time of 1:29.1 to Marietta's 1:32.0. The Pioneers took the second sprint in a near dead heat with a time of 1:30.2 with Adrian (1:30.3) close behind.

Marietta's varsity 8+ lineup included coxswain Chrissy Billingsley (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta), Chris Metz (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) in the stroke seat, Ethan Schafhausen (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central), Michael Shrader (Clarence Center, N.Y./Clarence), Evan Odom (Vista, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista), Brooks Spires (Sebastian, Fla./Sebastian River), Morgan Pirie (The Woodlands, Texas), Angelo Leitner-Wise (Alexandria, Va./TC Williams) and Dylan Dalpedri (Spring, Texas) in the bow.

The 2V crew consisted of coxswain Georgia Majka (Ocean View, N.J./Ocean City), John Montano (Spring, Texas) at stroke, Samuel Rojas (Bronx, N.Y./), George Riffle (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma), Scott Cressman (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge), Drayton Piper (Roswell, Ga.), John Saunders (Buffalo, N.Y./), William Rafferty (Moorestown, N.J./) and Joseph Madrid (Mineral Wells, W.Va.) in the bow.

MC's 3V boat featured coxswain Manning Shaw (Charleston, S.C./School of the Arts), Mitchell Nelsen (Placerville, Calif.) in the stroke position, Edmund Lynch (Marietta, Ga.), Cameron Short (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson), Patrick Watson (Sarasota, Fla.), Brett McGettigan (Absecon, N.J.), Tyler Heldt (Tampa, Fla.), Eli Egyed (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) and Benjamin Heckathorn (Westerville, Ohio) in the bow.

Marietta's varsity 4+ lineup included coxswain David Sher (Merion Station, Pa.), Josh Loudon (Streetsboro, Ohio/) in the stroke seat, Patrick Malone (Mount Laurel, N.J.), Gregorio Puntarelli (Houston, Texas) and Andrew Novak (Sewickley, Pa.) in the bow.

Marietta is back on the water next Saturday (Nov. 3) at the Head of the Occoquan in Fairfax Station, Virginia.
