Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer falls to John Carroll

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College men's soccer team was in action Saturday (Oct. 20) evening as they hosted Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) opponent John Carroll University on Marietta Field.  The Pioneers were defeated by the Blue Streaks, 1-0.

The first half was a hard fought battle as the game remained deadlocked at 0-0 at the intermission.  The match was evenly played as both the Pioneers and Blue Streaks had four shots in the half, with the Marietta having a pair of shots on goal.  The Pioneers back line of Zach Johnson (Beckley, W.Va./Woodrow Wilson), Anthony D'Egidio (Canton, Ohio/Dover), Sebastian Ziaja (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest), and Noah Laliberty (Scott Depot, W.Va./Winfield) played tough defense and only allowed one shot on goal, which goalie Dakota Penquite (Blanchester, Ohio/Blanchester) saved.

John Carroll came out of the half ready to play as they broke the scoring drought in the 65th minute of the match.  The Blue Streaks goal was scored by Jared Mattei.  Penquite was able to get a hand on the ball in a diving attempt to save the shot, but the ball found the back of the net.  The Pioneers had a tremendous opportunity at the end of the match as Robert Phillips (Elkins, W.Va./Aquinas Academy (Pa.)) ripped a shot from 20 yards out as time expired, but it hit the cross bar.  John Carroll was able to win the match, 1-0.

Penquite played all 90 minutes in the goal for the Pioneers, he faced 12 total shots, four of which were on goal, and made three saves in the match.

Marietta will return to the field Wednesday (Oct. 24) when they travel to take on Muskingum University, with the game set to begin at 7 p.m.
