#19 Women's Basketball sweeps Baldwin Wallace

MARIETTA, Ohio — The No. 19 Marietta College women's basketball team defeated Baldwin Wallace, 82-72, Saturday (Jan. 27) afternoon in Ban Johnson Arena. Marietta improves to 17-2 overall and 10-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Yellow Jackets drop to 12-7 on the season and 8-4 in the OAC.

With the win, Marietta sweeps the season series with Baldwin Wallace for the first time since the 1989-90 season. MC's 10 OAC wins is the most for the Pioneers since going 12-6 in the OAC during the same season.

"After a setback to Otterbein the other night we knew we had to get off to a good start and we did that against Baldwin Wallace," Marietta head coach Kole Vivian said. "Baldwin Wallace is a really good team and was able to make a run on us. But our maturity showed and we had a great fourth quarter. We are a little short handed right now with some injuries, but we got a total team effort today."

The Pioneers had four players in double digits led by senior point guard Amisha Herd (Zanesville, Ohio/West Muskingum) as she scored a game-high 22 points. Brooke Borich (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye) scored 18 points, while Shay Lett (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) and Corrie Burkhardt (Zanesville, Ohio/Philo) scored 12 and 10 points, respectively. Burkhardt had a double-double with 10 rebounds.

Riley Schill led a pair of Yellow jackets in double figures with 21 points to go along with a team-high seven rebounds. Hannah Fecht drained five three-pointers and finished with 19 points and five boards.

Marietta raced out to a 16-3 lead as Borich scored seven points in the opening minutes of the first quarter. BW settled down and trimmed the deficit to four points, 27-23, heading into the second quarter.

The Yellow Jackets opened the second period with a 10-0 run to take their first lead of the day. Megan Schubert recorded a traditional three-point play with 4:47 left in the half giving BW its biggest lead of the game, 36-29. Marietta cut the lead to two, 41-39, at halftime.

The Pioneers started the second half on a 6-0 run and maintained a small lead throughout the third quarter. Marietta clung to a 60-58 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

After trading small leads in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, Fecht hit a jumper to put BW on top, 67-66, with 6:23 left in the game. Marietta scored the next 11 points to build the first double-digit lead of the game, 77-67, with 3:24 remaining.

The Yellow jackets would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way.

For the game, Marietta shot 42.2% (27-of-64) from the floor, 25.0% (3-of-12) from three-point range and 75.8% (25-of-33) at the free throw line. The Yellow jackets were 24-of-53 (45.3%) from the floor, 11-of-23 (47.8%) behind the arc and 13-of-18 (72.2%) at the line.

The Pioneers edged Baldwin Wallace on the glass, 41-35. Marietta committed 13 turnovers, while the Yellow Jackets turned the ball over 20 times.

Marietta hits the road on Wednesday (Jan. 31) for a 7:30 p.m. tip off at the University of Mount Union.
