CLEVELAND, Ohio – Case Western Reserve University ended Marietta College's shutout streak scoring twice as the Spartans beat the Pioneers 2-1 Saturday (Sept. 16) afternoon in men's soccer action. The Pioneers drop to 4-1-1 overall, while Case Western improves to 3-2-1 on the season.
"Our performance today was too inconsistent. For us to be a top-level program we cannot have the fluctuation between this game and our previous matches," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "There were long stretches of this game where we were quite poor. We have to get back at it and start a new streak this week."
Midfielder
Tom Sloan (Stockport, England/Wilmslow) gave Marietta an early lead with an unassisted goal 9:46 into the match. Sloan fired a shot from 20-yards out for his second goal of the season.
The Spartans ended Marietta's streak of shutout minutes at 472 when Alex Besl intercepted a pass from the Pioneer keeper and slipped the ball inside the right post in the 13th minute.
With the score tied at 1-1, Besl tallied the game winner midway through the second half. With an assist from Maximillian Klemm, Besl beat
Dakota Penquite (Blanchester, Ohio/Blanchester) for his third goal of the season.
Penquite played all 90 minutes in goal for Marietta and posted seven saves in the match. Calvin Boyle went the distance in goal for the Spartans and recorded six saves in the win.
Case Western outshot the Pioneers 17-10 for the match, including a 9-7 edge in shots on goal. The Spartans were awarded nine corners to only three for Marietta.
Marietta returns home to host Bethany College in a non-conference match on Wednesday (Sept. 20) at 4 p.m.
