ADRIAN, Mich. — Marietta College scored a pair of second half goals as the Pioneers defeated Adrian College by the score of 2-0 Sunday (Sept. 10) afternoon in men's soccer. Marietta stays unbeaten on the season with a 4-0 record. The Bulldogs fall to 1-2 overall.
"Today was one of those games where I felt we survived the first half," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "We didn't fall into their game. We maintained a semblance of our possession game and it started to pay dividends in the second half. Brent's (Huck) goal was just sheer desire and Josh (Baskind) iced the game with a goal that is way harder than it looks."
The Bulldogs played a very physical match collecting twice as many fouls in the first half as Marietta, 10 to 5. Each team took six shots in the opening period. Adrian put two on frame, while the Pioneers managed only one shot on goal.
Marietta earned one of its eight corner kicks in the 63rd minute and the Pioneers made it count.
Noah Laliberty (Scott Depot, W.Va./Winfield) took the corner and placed a perfect ball into the six-yard box where
Brent Huck (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) headed it home for his first goal of the season.
Trailing 1-0, Adrian immediately went on the attack. Shayan Shushtari got off a strong shot from inside the box that Marietta keeper
Tyler Sholl (Johnstown, Ohio/Big Walnut) turned away. It was one of several spectacular saves for Sholl in the match.
Josh Baskind (Solon, Ohio/Solon) gave the Pioneers some breathing room with an unassisted goal in the 77th minute. Baskind took the ball into the 18-yard box and beat the Bulldog keeper with a shot inside the far right post for his second goal of the year.
Sholl anchored the Pioneer defense and posted five saves in 90 minutes for his second shutout of the season. Jake Dalzachio handle the goalkeeping duties for Arian and finished with a pair of saves.
Marietta still has not allowed a goal this season. The four straight shutouts is a program record as the Pioneers have now played 360 minutes without giving up a goal.
Huck leads the back line that includes juniors
Zach Johnson (Beckley, W.Va./Woodrow Wilson) and
Noah Laliberty (Scott Depot, W.Va./Winfield) and sophomore
Sebastian Ziaja (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest).
Marietta returns home to host No. 5 ranked Kenyon College on Wednesday (Sept. 13). Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
