Men's Rowing wraps up competition at the Knecht Cup

WEST WINDSOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Marietta College had two men's boats on the water at the Knecht Cup on Sunday (April 9). The varsity 8+ crew failed to advance out of the semifinals, while the second varsity 8+ shell placed third in the D2/D3 race.

Despite cutting over 15 seconds off its time from the Saturday heats, the varsity 8+ crew finished a disappointing seventh in the semifinal race and did not advance to either the grand or petite finals.

Army won MC's semi with a time of 6:03.90. Virginia was second crossing in 6:05.50, followed by Delaware (6:06.56), Bucknell (6:08.78), Temple (6:10.25), North Carolina (6:11.06) and Marietta (6:13.87).

The Pioneers sat coxswain Chrissy Billingsley (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta), Angelo Leitner-Wise (Alexandria, Va./TC Williams) at stroke, Jack Gleim (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro South), Matthew Bush (Williamstown, W.Va./Wood County Christian), Cameron Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic), Brooks Spires (Sebastian, Fla./Sebastian River), William Hooper (Reston, Va./Tabor Academy), Bryce Griffin (Cedar Hill, Texas/Midlothian) and Ethan Schafhausen (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) in the bow of the varsity 8+ boat.

With only seven entrants in the D2/D3 8+ race, the Pioneers went directly into Sunday's final and took third place. Mercyhurst had open water on the field and won with a time of 6:18.07.

Washington College and Marietta batted for second and third with the Shoremen edging the Pioneers at the line. Washington College posted a time of 6:35.88, while the Pioneers crossed in 6:38.65.

Saint Mary's (6:58.83) was next across the finish line, followed by Franklin & Marshall (7:00.61), Carnegie Mellon (7:06.82) and the Merchant Marine Academy (7:45.70).

MC's lineup included coxswain Manning Shaw (Charleston, S.C./School of the Arts), stroke Michael Shrader (Clarence Center, N.Y./Clarence), Sam Johnson (Mason, Ohio/William Mason), Evan Odom (Vista, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista), Martin Hall (Toney, Ala./Home Schooled), Richey Puntarelli (Marietta, Ohio), Scott Cressman (Philadelphia, Pa.), Trey Farley (Bidwell, Ohio/River Valley) and Max Mosey (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) in the bow.

Marietta travels to Tennessee next weekend for the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship Friday and Saturday (April 14-15).
