Softball ends season with split against John Carroll

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College closed out the 2017 softball season with a doubleheader split against John Carroll University Sunday (April 30) afternoon at Marietta Field. The Pioneers rolled to a 9-0, five-inning, win in game one before falling in the second game, 4-3.

Marietta finishes the season with a 14-24 overall record and 6-12 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. John Carroll ends up 18-20 on the season and 8-10 in the OAC.

The Pioneers took advantage of five Blue Streak errors in game one as seven of Marietta's nine run in the game were unearned.

Senior Alison Kach (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) (8-10) finished her career in grand fashion tossing the shutout. She allowed four hits and struck out three in her 5.0 inning complete game victory.

While Kach was taking care of business in the circle, The Pioneer bats went to work early scoring four times in the first inning, Marietta would score in each of its four offensive innings adding two in the second, one in third and two more in the fourth inning.

Marietta scored its first two runs of the game on a JCU error and then Cierra Bloom (Dennison, Ohio/Claymont) delivered a two-run doubled to the wall in right center making it 4-0.

Ali Prologo (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) had an RBI triple in the second inning scoring Brianna Finck (New Lexington, Ohio/Crooksville), who reached on a single. Stephanie Zentz (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) followed with a single through the right side of the infield knocking in Prologo.

Prologo made it 7-0 with a single to center field in the third inning driving in Bloom. Lauren Rockocy (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) plated MC's final run with a single in the fourth.

AnnMarie Kirchner (5-7) started in the circle for John Carroll and took the loss. She worked 3.0 innings and allowed eight runs, only two earned, on eight base hits. Jessica Cook threw 1.0 inning and gave up one unearned run on one hit.

Prologo finished 3-for-3 with a triple, two RBI and two runs scored. Rockocy and Bloom had two hits apiece, while Bloom drove in two runs.

In game two, Carly Simecek hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning breaking a 3-3 tie and leading John Carroll to the 4-3 victory.

The Blue Streaks jumped on top with two runs in the fifth inning, but Marietta answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame for a 3-2 lead.

Prologo drove in the Pioneers' first run of the game with an RBI single to left. Zentz picked up an RBI on a sac bunt and then an error allowed Prolog to come around and score.

JCU tied the game, 3-3, Miranda Noday slapped a two-out single to left field scoring Angie Zappitelli.

Kristina LaRocca (Strasburg, Ohio/Strasburg Franklin) (2-4) took the loss giving up one run on one hit in 1.0 inning of work. Jocelyn White (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) started and threw 6.0 innings. She allowed three runs on 10 hits.

Kelly Geringer (6-3) got the win in relief. Geringer pitched 2.2 shutout innings allowing one hits and striking out a pair. Brianna Lach worked 4.1 innings and was charged with three runs on five hits.

Zentz led the Pioneer offense going 2-for-2 with an RBI.
