Etta Express wraps up demanding Florida schedule

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Marietta College finished its spring trip on a sour note as the Etta Express lost to Amherst College by the score of 14-1 Saturday (March 18) in the Snowbird Classic. The Pioneers head north with a 5-5 overall record. Amherst improves to 2-4 on the young season.

Amherst jumped on the Pioneers for eight runs in the first three innings and never looked back. The Purple & White added single runs in the fifth and eighth innings and a four-spot in the seventh. Marietta pushed its lone run across in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Freshman James Angel (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) (0-2) was tagged with the loss. Angel started and threw 2.0 innings allowing six runs on five hits. Tommy Crowl (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) was touched up for two runs on four hits in 1.0 inning of work.

Kordell Antill (Woodsfield, Ohio/Monroe Central) and Jacob Baker (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) each worked 3.0 innings of relief. Antill gave up one unearned run on three hits with three strikeouts. Baker allowed five runs, just one earned, on one hit with four walks and five strikeouts.

Jackson Volle (1-0) tossed 6.0 strong innings for the win. Volle gave up one hit, walked two and struck out five. Three other pitchers toed the rubber for one inning each for Amherst.

Marietta collected seven singles in the game. Chandler Palyas (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) got the Pioneers on the board with an RBI single in the ninth. Michael Barnabei (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) led off with a single. Following a strikeout, Seamus Kenneally (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) and Joe Smythe (Massillon, Ohio/Massillon Washington) each single to load the bases for Palyas.

Kenneally and Smythe each had two hits in the game for the Pioneers.

Marietta will host Denison University in its home opener on Wednesday (March 22). First pitch for the single 9-inning game is set for 7:00 p.m. under the lights at Don Schaly Stadium.
