MARIETTA, Ohio — Whitman College outscored the University of Rochester 6-2 in the final two minutes to remain perfect on the season with a91-87 victory in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament.
The Blues improve to 31-0 on the season and advance to the national semifinals next weekend in Salem, Virginia. Rochester finishes their season 24-5 overall.
In a game that featured 13 ties and 10 lead changes, Whitman sank 10-of 14 free throw attempts down the stretch to get past a scrappy Rochester club. Joey Hewitt hit a pair of freebies with 1:24 remaining to put the Blues in front, 87-85, for the final time.
Two more from Hewitt extended the lead to four, 89-85, with 24 seconds left on the clock. Rochester's Sam Borst-Smith cut the deficit in half with a layup and the Yellowjackets called a quick timeout with 16 seconds left.
Rochester was forced to foul and Tim Howell made 1-of-2 free throws to make it 90-87. The Yellowjackets missed a three-pointer on their next possession and again had to put the Blues on the line.
Whitman's Jack Stewart made the first and missed the second attempt but time ran out on the Yellowjackets before they could get a shot off.
Stewart led the Blues with 22 points, including five three-pointers. Austin Butler notched a double-double with 17 points and 12 boards. Howell finished with 17 points and Jase Harrison added 14 points.
Rochester's Zack Ayers led all scorers with 27 points and pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds. Borst-Smith had 20 points, while Jacob Wittig finished with 15 points and nine assists.
Whitman will face Babson in the semifinal on Friday, March 17 at the Salem Civic Center.
