CAPITAL, Ohio — Marietta College defeated Capital University, 64-48, Wednesday (Feb. 8) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference women's basketball action. The Pioneers improve to 13-9 overall and 7-8 in the OAC. Capital slips to 9-13 on the season and 5-10 in league play.
The 13 wins is the most for Marietta since going 13-12 in 1994-95. With three games remaining in the regular season, Marietta is in fourth place in the OAC standings.
Brooke Borich (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye) led all scorers with 20 points.
Amisha Herd (Zanesville, Ohio/West Muskingum) finished with 16 points, while
Jenna Andersen (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) chipped in with nine points.
Alexis Enochs (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye) grabbed six rebounds for the Pioneers.
Chelsea Pla led the Crusaders with nine points and 11 rebounds. Sam Sech added seven points and Regan Stonerock pulled down six boards.
Marietta scored the first five points of the game on a layup from Herd and three-pointer from Borich. The Crusaders answered with six straight points to take their only lead on the night.
The Pioneers finished the first quarter on a 13-3 run and led 18-9 after one period. Capital trimmed the margin to three points, 23-20, with three minutes left in the second quarter. But once again Marietta finished strong scoring the final eight points of the half to take a 31-20 advantage into halftime.
Marietta maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half. A layup from Enochs with nine minutes left in the game gave the Pioneers its biggest lead of the night, 24 points, 57-33.
For the game, Marietta shot 37.5% (24-of-64) from the floor, 28.6% (4-of-14) from three-point range and 63.2% (12-of-19) from the free throw line. Capital was 17-of-60 (28.3%) from the floor, 2-of-8 (25.0%) behind the arc and 12-of-20 (60.0%) at the line.
The Crusaders outrebounded Marietta, 48-40. Capital committed 23 turnovers, while the Pioneers turned the ball over 19 times.
