ADA, Ohio — No. 5 ranked Ohio Northern University used a big second quarter to pull away from Marietta College en route to an 82-43 victory Saturday (Feb. 18) afternoon in the regular season finale for both schools.
The Polar Bears remain perfect with a 25-0 overall record and won the Ohio Athletic Conference Regular Season title with an 18-0 league record. Marietta ends the regular season at 15-10 overall and 9-9 in the OAC. The Pioneers will be the No. 4 seed in next week's OAC Tournament.
Senior
Jordanna Rauch (Fleming, Ohio/Warren) splashed home four three-pointers and was the only Pioneer in double figures with 14 points.
Corrie Burkhardt (Zanesville, Ohio/Philo) added six points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Amy Bullimore led the Polar Bears with 18 points and nine boards. Britt Lauck chipped in with 17 points, while Abby Weeks finished with nine markers. Angela Tesny grabbed seven rebounds.
Jenna Andersen (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) scored an old-fashioned three-point play to give Marietta its only lead of the game, 3-2, in the opening minutes. The Pioneers stayed with ONU in the first quarter and trailed by three, 13-10, after the first 10 minutes.
Ohio Northern turned up the pressure on both ends of the floor in the second quarter outscoring Marietta 27-6. The Polar Bears used a 13-3 run to push the margin to 13 points, 28-15, midway through the period.
Marietta would score just one more point in the period as the Polar Bears held MC scoreless for the final 4:25 of the quarter. Ohio Northern finished the period on a 12-0 run and led 40-16 at the break.
The Pioneers played ONU even in the third quarter but the Polar Bears out paced Marietta by 15 points in the final period.
For the game, Marietta shot 29.8% (14-of-47) from the floor, 20.8% (5-of-24) from three-point range and 58.8% (10-of-17) at the free throw line. Ohio Northern was 25-of-55 (45.5%) from the floor, 3-of-15 (20.0%) behind the arc and 29-of-37 (78.4%) at the line.
The Polar Bears dominated the glass grabbing 43 rebounds to just 28 for Marietta. The Pioneers turned the ball over 19 times, while Ohio Northern committed 10 turnovers.
As the No. 4 seed, Marietta will be at home on Tuesday (Feb. 21) at 6:00 p.m. The Pioneers will play the winner of No. 8 Capital (10-15, 6-12 OAC) at No. 5 Otterbein (11-14, 7-11 OAC). Capital plays at Otterbein on Monday.
