MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's basketball team defeated the University of Mount Union, 76-62, Wednesday (Feb. 1) evening in Ban Johnson Arena. Marietta swept the season series from the Purple Raiders for the first time in 12 years.
With the victory, Marietta improves to 11-9 overall and 5-8 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Mount Union falls to 9-11 on the season and 4-9 in league play.
Junior
Amisha Herd (Zanesville, Ohio/West Muskingum) led the Pioneers with 20 points and nine rebounds. The Pioneer point guards dished out four assists and had five steals in the game.
Jo Herd-Middlebrooks (Columbus, Ohio/DeSales) finished with 12 points, while
Shay Lett (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) added 11 points.
Corrie Burkhardt (Zanesville, Ohio/Philo) chipped in with eight points and nine boards.
Abbey Bartoszewicz drained six three-pointers and led Mount Union with 20 points. Jaime Sanborn was also in double figures with 11 points. Erin White pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
Mount Union stumbled out of the gate failing to score through the first seven minutes of the game. The Pioneers took advantage of the Purple Raiders' shooting woes to build a 13-0 lead and led 20-10 at the end of the first quarter.
The Purple Raiders used a 9-0 run midway through the second quarter to cut the deficit to three points, 29-26, with 3:54 left in the half. Marietta scored the next four points and hung on to a seven-point lead, 37-30, at halftime.
A three-pointer from Rachel Tinkey at the 5:03 mark of the third quarter brought the Raiders all the way back and knotted the game at 42-42. Marietta answered with an 8-0 run to stay in front and led 51-44 heading into the fourth quarter.
Marietta quickly dashed any hopes of a Mount Union comeback with a 9-2 run to start the fourth quarter. Two baskets from Burkhardt and one each from
Ashley Barker (Mogadore, Ohio/Mogadore) and
Alexis Enochs (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye) gave the Pioneers a 14-point lead, 60-46, with seven minutes left in the game.
Mount Union did manage to cut the lead to nine points but the Pioneers finished the game on a 5-0 run to put the game away.
For the game, Marietta shot 41.3% (26-of-63) from the floor, 33.3% (6-of-18) from three-point range and 75.0% (18-of-24) at the line. Mount Union was 23-of-55 (41.8%) from the floor, 10-of-28 (35.7%) behind the arc and 6-of-11 (54.5%) at the line.
Marietta edged the Purple Raiders on the glass, 38-37. Mount Union turned the ball over 19 times, while the Pioneers committed just 10 turnovers.
