Men's Soccer stymied by John Carroll

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College dropped a 3-0 decision to John Carroll University Saturday (Oct. 7) afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference men's soccer action. The loss drops Marietta to 8-3-1 on the season and 2-1 in the OAC. John Carroll moves to 10-1-1 overall and 2-1 in the OAC.

"We gave them a good run after we gave up the first goal. I felt that we were in good position to get the tying goal in the first half but we didn't get it," Marietta head coach Joe Bergin said. "We started the second half strong, but gave up two soft goals and they are too good to do that to. It wasn't our worst performance by any stretch of the imagination, but it is a learning experience nevertheless."

John Carroll, the defending OAC champions, stuck one in less than eight minutes into the match. Hayden Parente scored an unassisted goal, his sixth of the season, for the early 1-0 lead.

Marietta turned up the pressure but could not get the equalizer and headed into halftime down 1-0.

The Blue Streaks struck early in the second half as well. A long through ball from Brian Lutz found Dalton Browsky just outside the 18-yard box. Marietta keeper Tyler Sholl (Johnstown, Ohio/Big Walnut) came out and allowed JCU to get behind him. Browsky fed the ball to Jess Marinaro for the empty net goal in the 50th minute.

Jake Girardot added an insurance goal in the 69th minute. Marinaro dribbled along the end line and passed the ball back to Girardot at the top of the 6-yard box. Girardot slipped the ball inside the right post for his first goal of the season.

Sholl had two saves in the match for the Pioneers. Liam McIntosh posted the shutout in goal for John Carroll. McIntoch notched four saves.

Each team took nine shots in the match. The Blue Streaks had a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.

Marietta hosts the University of Mount Union on Wednesday (Oct. 11). Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
