ADA, Ohio — Marietta College and Ohio Northern University battled to a 1-1 double overtime draw in the regular season finale for both schools Saturday (Oct. 28) evening in men's soccer action. The Pioneers are 10-5-3 overall and finish the season 4-3-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Ohio Northern is 12-5-2 overall and 5-3-1 in the OAC.
110 minutes wasn't enough to get a winner this evening, but the teams will get another chance in the first round of the OAC Tournament on Tuesday (Oct. 31). The No. 5 seed Pioneers will travel back to Ada for a rematch with No. 4 seed ONU. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Marietta came out attacking in the first half firing off several good shots. ONU keeper Dylan Plank notched five saves in the first 45 minutes and the teams went into halftime tied, 0-0.
Cole Pappas (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) put the Pioneers in front with an unassisted goal in the 66th minute. Pappas stole the ball just outside the ONU 18-yard box and blistered a shot by Plank inside the far post. It was his third goal of the season.
Ohio Northern picked up the attack taking 14 second-half shots. Although few were on frame, the Polar Bears got the equalizer with less than two minute left in regulation.
Marietta was whistled for foul giving ONU a free kick. Cory Lains took the free kick and sent the ball into the box where Grant Cayot headed the ball to the far post. Zachary Yoder was there to tap it in for the goal, his fourth of the season.
The Polar Bear defense held Marietta without a shot in the two overtime periods. Ohio Northern managed one shot on goal in each extra period, but Pioneer keeper
Tyler Sholl (Johnstown, Ohio/Big Walnut) saved both shots. Sholl finished with five saves in the match.
For the match, Ohio Northern outshot the Pioneers 20-12. However, Marietta had an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. The Polar Bears took seven corner kicks, while MC had five.
