MARIETTA, Ohio — Muskingum University posted a 75-62 win over Marietta College Wednesday (Jan. 4) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference women's basketball. The loss drops Marietta to 7-5 overall and 1-4 in the OAC. The Muskies improve to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in league play.
The Pioneers opened a five-point lead in the first quarter and trailed by just two points, 19-17, after the first period. Shooting woes haunted Marietta the remainder of the game. Marietta made only 2-of-27 three-point attempts and also missed 19 free throws in the game.
Sophomore
Corrie Burkhardt (Zanesville, Ohio/Philo) led the Pioneers with 15 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double.
Shay Lett (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) and
Alexis Enochs (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye) both came off the bench to score 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The Muskies outscored Marietta by 10 points in the second quarter and took a 38-26 lead into halftime. The Pioneers played Muskingum even in the second half, but couldn't overcome 12 three-pointers from Muskingum on the night.
Mallory Taylor led the Muskies with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Hallie Stocker chipped in with 14 points. Taylor and Stocker each sank treys in the game.
For the game, Marietta shot 31.3% (20-of-64) from the floor, 7.4% (2-of-27) from three-point range and 51.3% (20-of-39) at the free throw line. Muskingum was 29-of-70 (41.4%) from the floor, 12-of-31 (38.7%) behind the arc and 83.3% (5-of-6) at the line.
Muskingum edged the Pioneers on the boards, 48-45. The Muskies turned the ball over 23 times, while Marietta committed 16 turnovers.
