Women's Basketball knocks off Mount Union in overtime

ALLIANCE, Ohio — The Marietta College women's basketball team downed the University of Mount Union, 80-75, in overtime Wednesday (Jan. 11) evening. The Pioneers improve to 8-6 overall and 2-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Mount Union galls to 8-6 on the season and 3-4 in the OAC.

Brooke Borich (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye) poured in a career-high 27 points, including 16 in the fourth quarter, to lead all scorers. She also dished out seven assists. Corrie Burkhardt (Zanesville, Ohio/Philo) scored five of Marietta's nine points in overtime and finished with 16 points.

Shay Lett (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) and Alexis Enochs (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye) each chipped in with 11 points. Amisha Herd (Zanesville, Ohio/West Muskingum) came off the bench to grab a team-high seven rebounds.

Abbey Bartoszewicz and Jaime Sanborn led the Purple Raiders with 18 points each. Sanborn notched the double-double with 10 rebounds. Erin White scored 14 points and Tori Rappach had 12 points.

Borich nailed a three-pointer with 37 seconds left in regulation to even the game at 71-71. Herd stole the ball on Mount's next possession to give the Pioneers a chance for the win. Marietta missed a pair of jumpers in the final seconds sending the game into overtime.

A pair of layups from Burkhardt gave Marietta a four-point lead, 75-71. Mount Union bounced back to tie the game at 75-75, with 2:12 left on the clock. Burkhardt hit one of two free throws to put the Pioneers back in front by one.

Following a Mount Union turnover, Borich got an offensive rebound and layup extending the Pioneer lead to three, 78-75, with 46 seconds remaining.

Mount Union missed a three-pointer and Herd was fouled on the rebound. She sank both free throws to secure the Pioneer victory.

For the game, Marietta shot 42.0% (29-of-69) from the floor, 42.3% (11-of-26) from three-point range and 73.3% (11-of-15) from the free throw line. Mount Union was 24-of-65 (36.9%) from the floor, 7-of-26 (26.9%) behind the arc and 20-of-24 (83.3%) at the line.

Mount Union outrebounded the Pioneers, 49-35. Marietta committed 15 turnovers, while the Purple Raiders turned the ball over 20 times.
