Box Score 2 YORK, Pa. — Marietta College opened with two victories on the first day of the York Spartan Volleyball Classic Friday (Sept. 23) evening. The Pioneers defeated Wilson College, 3-0, and downed York, 3-1. Marietta improves to 11-6 on the season.
Marietta dominated Wilson (0-8 overall) posting game scores of 25-11, 25-9 and 25-8 in the sweep.
Grace Haas (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and
Amanda Arrowood (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Groveport Madison) led the Pioneer attack with nine and eight kills, respectively.
In addition to a strong attack at the net, the Pioneers were deadly from the service line amassing 10 aces in the three-game match.
Amber Mauric (Crystal, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's School) led the way with four aces, while
Mallory Vodopich (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Perry) and
Hunter Barnes (Duncan Falls, Ohio/Philo) each had three.
Defensively,
Emily Peters (Elyria, Ohio/Keystone) had a team-best eight digs.
Paige Cline (Pomeroy, Ohio/Eastern) and
Megan Hesson (Lowell, Ohio/Fort Frye) added four digs apiece.
In the final match of the night, Marietta dropped the first game against York (14-2 overall) before rebounding to win the next three games for the victory. Barnes led the Pioneers with 13 kills.
Erica Denallo (Parma, Ohio/Independence) added nine. Arrowood and Vodopich each recorded seven kills.
Cassie Staten (Athens, Ohio/Athens) directed the attack dishing out 34 assists.
Peters again led the back line with 13 digs. Staten had nine digs, while Mauric finished with eight and Denallo had seven.
Marietta finishes play in the York Spartan Volleyball Classic on Saturday (Sept. 24). The Pioneers play King's College at 11:30 a.m. and Fairleigh Dickinson University at 1:30 p.m.
