KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Marietta College softball team opened its Florida swing with a pair of losses in close games. The Pioneers fell to Mount St. Joseph, 3-2, and then dropped a 2-0 decision to Montclair State.
Marietta (2-4 overall) jumped on top with an unearned run in the first inning against Mount St. Joseph (2-0-1).
Brianna Finck (New Lexington, Ohio/Crooksville) reached on an error and stole second base.
Rachel Montgomery (Massillon, Ohio/Perry) followed with an RBI double. The Pioneers added another unearned run in the fourth for a 2-0 lead.
Mount St. Joseph got on the board with three runs in the top of the fifth. An RBI double from Claire Wehby and a run-scoring single from Morgan Kain sparked the Lion rally.
Alison Kach (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) (2-2) started in the circle for the Pioneers and was tagged with the loss. Kach went 4.1 innings and allowed three runs on five hits. She struck out three and didn't walk a batter.
Kristina LaRocca (Strasburg, Ohio/Strasburg Franklin) worked the final 2.2 innings without allowing a hit.
Danielle Nichelson (2-0) got the win for the Lions. She tossed 6.0 innings and scattered five hits. Both runs she allowed were unearned. Paige Kiesewetter threw the seventh inning to notch her first save.
Amy Castle (Columbus, Ohio/Groveport Madison) was the lone Pioneer with multiple hits in the game going 2-for-2.
The Pioneers couldn't get their bats going in game two as Montclair State's Brooke Powers (1-0) tossed the complete game shutout. Powers gave up just four hits.
Montclair State (1-0) also struggled at the plate, but two runs in the bottom of the sixth was all the Red Hawks needed. Noel Hodgins led off the sixth with a single. She stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. Powers followed with an RBI single. Powers would later score on a single off the bat of Samantha DiClemnti.
Jocelyn White (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) (0-2) went the distance in the circle for Marietta. White allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out two.
Marietta is back in action Monday (March 7) morning with a 9:00 a.m. game against Illinois College followed by a match up with Beloit College at 11:15 a.m.
