MARIETTA, Ohio — For the second straight night Gwynedd Mercy University tried to pull off a last second come from behind victory. But Julian Hyden's three-pointer was off the mark at the buzzer as Oswego State University held on for a 78-77 victory.
Oswego State (22-8) advances to the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament sectional round next weekend. Gwynedd Mercy finishes the season 22-7.
Down by as many as 10 points in the second half, the Griffins slowly worked themselves back into the game. A pair of free throws from Hyden with 24 seconds left put Gwynedd Mercy in front 77-76.
On the ensuing possession, Oswego's Brian Sortino hit a jumper for two of his 14 second half points to put the Laker back in front, 78-77, with seven ticks left on the clock.
With no timeouts remaining, Gwynedd Mercy inbounded the ball and raced up the floor where Hyden would attempt the last second three-pointer.
Keith Tyson led Oswego State with 19 points. Sortino finished with 17, while Kyle Covley and Alex Rawa each had 12 points. Mark Candelario helped the Lakers control the glass with a game-high 12 boards.
Hyden led all scorers with 27 points and had a double-double with 10 rebounds. Cedric Elleby added 21 points and seven boards, while Brian Hennessey finished with 11 points.
