MARIETTA, Ohio — No. 10-ranked Ohio Northern University won the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season championship with a convincing 64-48 win over Marietta College Saturday (Feb. 20) afternoon in women's basketball action. The Pioneers end the season with a 12-13 overall record and 6-12 league mark. The Polar Bears improve to 22-3 overall and 17-1 in the OAC.
Marietta's 12 wins are the most for the Pioneers since winning 13 in the 1994-95 season.
Brooke Borich (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye) came off the bench to lead the Pioneers with 14 points. Borich hit a pair of three-pointers to go along with four rebounds and three assists.
Amisha Herd (Zanesville, Ohio/West Muskingum) notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 steals. Herd set a new school sinle season record with 87 steals this year.
Morgan Liedtke (Lowell, Ohio/Fort Frye), playing her final game in the Navy Blue and White, finished with nine points. Freshman
Corrie Burkhardt (Zanesville, Ohio/Philo) grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
Precious Ramsey was the lone Polar Bear in double figures with 11 points. Karissa Steffas scored nine points and pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.
Ohio Northern scored the first five points of the game and never trailed. The Polar Bears led 17-4 after the first quarter and took a 34-17 lead into halftime. ONU pulled away in the third quarter outscoring the Pioneers 20-7 in the period. Marietta cut into the lead in the fourth quarter with 24 points to Ohio Northern's 10.
For the game, Marietta shot 23.8% (15-of-63) from the floor, 23.8% (5-of-21) from three-point range and 81.3% (13-of-16) at the free throw line. The Polar Bears were 25-of-65 (38.5%) from the floor, 4-of-11 (36.4%) from three-point range and 10-of-13 (76.9%) at the line.
Ohio Northern dominated the boards outrebounding the Pioneers 56-36. The Polar Bears turned the ball over 18 times, while Marietta committed 12 turnovers.
