WESTERVILLE, Ohio —
Dillon Young (Laurelville, Ohio/Logan Elm) drained five three-pointers and finished with 19 points as No. 3 ranked Marietta College easily defeated Otterbein University 79-54 Tuesday (Dec. 6) evening in an Ohio Athletic Conference match-up. The Pioneers improve to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the OAC, while Otterbein falls to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Young scored 16 of his points in the first half as the Pioneers led by as many as 20 points in the opening period. Otterbein's Jake Phillis hit a three-pointer to tie the game, 10-10, five minutes into the game. Marietta went on a 23-3 run and led 33-13 at the 5:57 mark.
The Cardinals outscored Marietta 17-10 in the final minutes of the first half to trim the deficit to 13 points, 43-30, at the break. Otterbein would get no closer. Marietta's
Keith Richardson (Englewood, Ohio/Northmont) hit one of two free throws with 7:04 left in the game to give MC its biggest lead of the night, 22 points, 67-45.
Young finished with 19 points and four assists.
Anthony Wallace (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School) also scored 19 points for the Pioneers converting 7-off-11 shot attempts and sinking a trio of three-pointers.
A.J. Edwards (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) chipped in with 15 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
Kyle Dixon (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) also grabbed eight boards and dished five assists.
Bryan Mackenzie led the Cardinals with 14 points and four rebounds. Phillis and Nick Nossaman each added eight points, while Matt Hughes finished with seven points.
Marietta totally dominated the glass pulling down nearly as many offensive rebounds as Otterbein had in total rebounds. The Pioneers finished with 43 totals boards, including 17 on the offensive glass. Otterbein had 22 total rebounds in the game.
For the second game in a row and fourth time this season, the Pioneers were in single digits in turnovers with just nine against the Cardinals. Otterbein turned the ball over 12 times leading to 15 Marietta points.
For the game, Marietta shot 50.8% (30-of-59) from the floor, 40.7% (11-of-27) from three-point range and 50.0% (8-of-16) at the free throw line. The Cardinals were 18-of-47 (38.3%) from the floor, 9-of-22 (40.9%) behind the arc and 9-of-11 (81.8%) at the charity stripe.
