Women's Basketball defends Turkey Shoot title

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College used a huge second half to pull away from Bethany College and post a 78-52 win in the championship game of the 32nd annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot Sunday (Nov. 27) afternoon in Ban Johnson Arena. It was the second straight Turkey Shoot title for the Pioneers as Marietta improved to 5-1 on the season.

52 of Marietta's points came from the bench, including 31 of 44 in the second half. Bethany (2-3 overall), with only eight players dressed, struggled to keep up with the Pioneers after halftime.

Marietta grabbed the early lead but couldn't shake the Bison. Bethany trailed by as many as 12 points in the first quarter but steadily worked itself back into the game. A pair of free throws from Kelsea Daugherty tied the game, 21-21, with 4:47 left in the second period. MC took a slim 34-30 lead into halftime.

Brooke Borich (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye) ignited the Pioneer offense in the third quarter draining three from long range in the period. Marietta stepped up its defense as well limiting Bethany to just five points in the quarter and pushed the lead to 56-35 heading into the final 10 minutes of play.

The Pioneers continued their hot shooting, converting 53.3% of its shots from the floor in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

Borich led Marietta with 15 points, all on three-pointers. Corrie Burkhardt (Zanesville, Ohio/Philo) posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds to earn the Lisa Wagner Most Valuable Player Award. Jo Herd-Middlebrooks (Columbus, Ohio/DeSales) added 11 points. Point guard Amisha Herd (Zanesville, Ohio/West Muskingum), who scored 20 points on Saturday, was named to the all-tournament team after chipping in with five points and six boards today.

Daugherty and Kayley Holenka represented Bethany on the all-tournament team. Daugherty led the Bison with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Holenka finished with eight points to go along with 36 points on Saturday.

For the game, Marietta shot 41.8% (28-of-67) from the floor, 41.7% (10-of-24) from three-point range and 66.7% (12-of-18) from the free throw line. Bethany was 19-of-58 (32.8%) from the floor, 4-of-15 (26.7%) behind the arc and 10-of-14 (71.4%) at the line.

Bethany edged the Pioneers on the glass, 42-40. But the Bison committed 21 turnovers in the game to just nine by Marietta.

Penn State Behrend's Katie Chess and North Carolina Wesleyan's KeChae Parker were also named to the all-tournament team. North Carolina Wesleyan defeated Behrend in the consolation game, 64-57.
