Top seeded John Carroll ends Men's Soccer season

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — Marietta College surrendered two goals in the first five minutes of its Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament semifinal match at top-seeded John Carroll University Wednesday (Nov. 2) and was never able to recover as the Blue Streaks went to win 7-1.

Marietta, seeded fourth in the tournament, finishes the season wit a 11-9-1 overall record. John Carroll improves to 12-5-2 on the season and advances to the championship match for the sixth straight season.

"We simply ran into a very hot team and, combined with the fact that our legs just weren't there today, made for a long day for us," Marietta head coach Joe Bergin said. "Kudos to John Carroll. They put one on us. We will regroup and get back to work for next fall as we look to continue to move up the conference table."

The Blue Streaks struck quickly as Hayden Parente found the back of the Pioneer net a little over two minutes into the match. Dalton Browsky and Myles Taylor picked up assists on the early goal.

Taylor made it 2-0 at the 4:46 mark with an assists from Jacob Lombardo. The early deficit got bigger for Marietta when Parente tallied his second goal of the match in the 12th minute with an assist from Jesse Marinaro.

After Lombardo scored in the 27th minute, with an assist from Jarrod McDowell, Marietta trailed 4-0 at halftime.

The Pioneers regrouped at the break and tried to get a comeback started right from the opening whistle of the second half. Zach Johnson (Beckley, W.Va./Woodrow Wilson) got the Pioneers on the board with an unassisted goal just 10 seconds into the period.

But Marietta's momentum was short-lived when they gave the Blue Streaks an own goal six minutes later to trail 5-1.

Dalton Browsky and Justin Miller added goals for JCU to push the final margin to 7-1. Tim Delaney and Marinaro were awarded assist on Browsky's goal, while Miller converted a penalty kick.

Tyler Sholl (Johnstown, Ohio/Big Walnut) started in goal for Marietta and posted three saves in the first half. Trevor Dykstra (Jamestown, N.Y./Falconer Central) played the second half in goal for the Pioneers and had a pair of saves. Liam McIntosh and Matt Gordon split time in goals for the Blue Streaks. McIntoch had one save.

For the match, John Carroll outshot the Pioneers 20-5, including a 12-2 edge in shots on goal. The Blue Streaks also had a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.
