UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — John Carroll University scored touchdowns on long runs in each of its first two possessions as the Blue Streaks defeated Marietta College 42-7 Saturday (Oct. 8) afternoon in Don Shula Stadium. The loss drops Marietta to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. John Carroll improves to 4-1 overall and 4-0 in the OAC.
Ro Golphin scampered 31 yards to pay dirt on the Blue Streaks' first possession and Sam Kukura scored from 45 yards out on their second for an early 14-0 lead. Kukura added a second touchdown, this time a 6-yard run, in the second quarter as JCU led 21-0 at halftime.
The Blue Streaks ran the ball for 303 yards as Golphin and Kukura both finished with over 100 yards rushing. Golphin, who scored a pair of rushing touchdowns in the third quarter, carried the ball 15 times for 132 yards. Kukura added 117 yards on 13 carries.
Trailing 42-0, Marietta got on the board in the fourth quarter when
Roger Walker (Palm Bay, Fla./Bayside) ran the ball in from 7 yards out.
Jimmy Embrescia (Northfield, Ohio/Nordonia) added the point after to make it 42-7. Walker went over the 100-yard mark for the second straight week. He carried the ball 19 times for 108 yards.
Marietta's
Darrien Fields (Aliquippa, Pa./Aliquippa) completed 18-of-25 passes for 131 yards. He was picked off once. JCU signal caller Anthony Moeglin threw for 136 yards completing 14-of-16 attempts.
Ryan VanMeter (Maysville, W.Va./Petersburg) led the Pioneers with six receptions for just 20 yards.
Zach Iovino (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) caught three passes for 42 yards and
Andrew Barker (Mogadore, Ohio/Mogadore) grabbed a pair passes for 40 yards.
Nine different players caught passes for the Blue Streaks. Kukura led the way with four receptions for 33 yards.
Senior defensive back
Corey Hunsberger (Washington, Pa./Trinity) led all defenders with 13 tackles. Sophomore linebacker
Garrett Davis (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) finished with 10 tackles. Mason McKenrick and Jovon Dawson each had seven stops for JCU.
