Men's Soccer grabs 2-0 win over Wilmington

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's soccer team scored once in each half as the Pioneers defeated Wilmington College 2-0 on Homecoming Saturday (Oct. 15) afternoon. Marietta improves to 8-6-1 overall and 3-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Quakers falls to 4-8-2 overall and 1-4 in the OAC.

"We were coming off a couple of tough results and Wilmington is tough side, so I wasn't sure how it would go," Marietta head coach Joe Bergin said. "I am very happy with the effort. We stuck to our game plan and got a couple of goals and then ground out the result. Taylor and Andy came thru on the offense and our back four and keeper were excellent today."

After getting an unlucky bounce off the crossbar in the 27th minute, senior Taylor Reasoner (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) knocked a second shot off the bar two minutes later. This time however, the ball defelcted into the net for Taylor's ninth goal of the season.

While Reasoner was providing the offense, Marietta's defense was in lockdown mode. The Pioneers limited Wilmington to just a single shot in the first half and five for the match.

Brent Huck (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta), Luke Maher (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), Noah Laliberty (Scott Depot, W.Va./Winfield) and Sebastian Ziaja (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) anchored the Pioneer back line as Marietta and keeper Tyler Sholl (Johnstown, Ohio/Big Walnut) recorded their fifth clean sheet of the season.

Marietta extended its lead less than two minutes into the second half. Sophomore Andy Rolfes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) riffled a shot from inside the 18-yard box that deflected off of Wilmington keeper Nick Baker and into the goal for a 2-0 Pioneer lead. It was the fourth goal of the season for Rolfes.

The Pioneers outshot Wilmington 11-5 for the match, including a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. Marietta took six corner kicks to Wilmington's four.
