BEREA, Ohio — No. 10 ranked Marietta College cruised to a 90-70 win over Baldwin Wallace University Saturday (Jan. 30) in a key Ohio Athletic Conference road game. The Pioneers, winners of nine straight, improve to 16-2 overall and 10-1 in the OAC. BW falls to 10-8 overall and 5-6 in the OAC.
With the win, Marietta keeps pace with OAC leader John Carroll. The Blue Streaks, ranked No. 4 nationally, are 12-0 in conference play and 19-0 overall. The Pioneers are one game ahead of third place Mount Union (10-2 OAC, 14-5 overall).
Junior
A.J. Edwards (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) notched his sixth double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Dillon Young (Laurelville, Ohio/Logan Elm) hit four three-pointers and led all scorers with 18 points.
Luis Garcia (Miami, Fla./Florida Christian) finished in double figures with 12 points.
Three Yellow Jackets reached double digits with Jay Battle and Cameron Kuhn each hitting for 15 points. Zach Warner came off the bench to score 13 points. All three finished with four rebounds apiece.
Battle opened the scoring with a three-pointer to give BW its only lead of the game. The Pioneers answered with 16 straight points, including a trio of three-pointers from Young, to go on top 16-3. Marietta would not relinquish the lead again.
The Pioneers pushed the lead to as many as 17 points in the first half. BW managed to cut the deficit to single digits, 47-38, at halftime.
Baldwin Wallace stayed within striking distance through the first 12 minutes of the second half. A three-pointer from Warner cut the margin to five, 57-52, with 13:41 left on the clock.
A pair of free throws from
Anthony Wallace (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School) at the 8:59 mark pushed Marietta's advantage back to ten points, 66-56. The Yellow Jackets would get no closer as the Pioneers extended the lead to 20 points, 83-63, with 2:28 remaining.
For the game, Marietta shot 50.0% (29-of-58) from the floor, 40.0% (10-of-25) from three-point range, and 71.0% (22-of-31) at the free throw line. The Yellow jackets were 26-of-62 (41.9%) from the floor, 8-of-25 (32.0%) behind the arc and 10-of-12 (83.3%) at the line.
Marietta outrebounded Baldwin Wallace 39-33. The Yellow Jackets turned the ball over 10 times, while Marietta committed just seven turnovers.
