Football falls on the road to Denison in season opener

GRANVILLE, Ohio — Quarterback Tommy Iammarino threw three first half touchdown passes as Denison University defeated Marietta College by the score of 41-14 Saturday (Sept. 5) evening. The game was the season opener for both schools.

Iammarino hit Dushawn Brown on a 22-yard scoring strike with 4:20 left in the first quarter and the Big Red never looked back. He added TD passes of 30-yards to Jordan Patterson and 22-yards to Cam Layer before halftime. Iammarino completed 17-of-23 attempts for 316 yards.

Marietta answered Denison's first score with a 7-play, 41-yard scoring drive. Nick O'Neal (Mont Belvieu, Texas/Barbers Hill) capped the drive with a 1-yard dive for the score. Jimmy Embrescia (Northfield/Nordonia) added the point after to knot the score, 7-7, with 13:52 left in the half.

Denison added a Conor Dunn 24-yard field goal and led 24-7 at the break. The Big Red extended its lead to 41-7 with 4:44 remaining in the game.

The Pioneers added one more score when Lucas Havens (Granville Summit, Pa./Troy Area) hits Clay Moorefield (Pittsburgh, Pa./University Prep) on a 9-yard touchdown with 1:54 left. Embrescia added the PAT to make it 41-14.

Havens finished 16-of-40 for 170 yards. He threw one touchdown and had two aerials picked off. Moorefield had 10 catches for 91 yards. O'Neal finished with 151 yards on 29 carries.

Senior linebacker Daryl DeWindt (Lilburn, Ga./Meadowcreek) led the Pioneer defense with nine tackles. Dean Myers (Canal Winchester/Canal Winchester), Jeremy Pratt (St. Marys, W.Va./St. Marys) and Tonio McElveen (Missouri City, Texas/Hightower) each made eight stops.

Marietta takes next week off before opening Ohio Athletic Conference play on Saturday (Sept. 19) against Otterbein University in Don Drumm Stadium. Kick off is set for 6:00 p.m.
