MARIETTA, Ohio — The University of Mount Union, ranked No. 2 nationally, scored on its first four possessions of the game as the Purple Raiders ran past Marietta College by the score of 61-0 Saturday (Sept. 26) afternoon. Mount Union ups its record to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Pioneers fall to 0-3 on the season and 0-2 in the OAC.
The Purple Raiders amassed 716 yards of total offense including 412 on the ground and 304 through the air. Bradley Mitchell ran for 89 yards on 13 carries and scored twice. Logan Nemeth carried the ball 12 times for 85 yards and three touchdowns.
Taurice Scott completed 20-of-31 passes for 279 yards and two touchdowns. He added 41 yards rushing on seven carries. Tim Kennedy was Scott's favorite target catching 10 passes for 126 yards and a score.
An illegal shift penalty stalled Marietta's best drive of the game. The Pioneers took over on downs at their own 33-yard line early in the third quarter. Several runs by
Roger Bush (Palm Bay, Fla./Bayside) and three completions from quarterback
Lucas Havens (Granville Summit, Pa./Troy Area) put the ball on the Mount Union 20-yard line.
Facing a third and seven, the Pioneers were forced to call a timeout to avoid a delay of game penalty. Following the timeout, Havens hit
Nick Hineman (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) for what appeared to be a 20-yard scoring strike. However, Marietta was flagged for an illegal shift moving the ball back to the 25-yard line where the drive stalled.
Marietta was limited to 151 yards of total offense, the most allowed by Mount Union this season. Havens completed 10-of-21 passes for 74 yards. Bush finished with 46 yards rushing on 13 carries.
Defensively,
Corey Hunsberger (Washington, Pa./Trinity) led the Pioneers with 15 total tackles.
Masai McDaniel (Cleveland Heights/Lake Catholic) made 12 tackles.
