TIFFIN, Ohio — Marietta College dropped a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference softball games Saturday (April 11) afternoon at Heidelberg University. The Student Princes took game one, 7-6, and the nightcap 9-0 in five innings.
Marietta falls to 11-15 on the season and 4-6 n the OAC. Heidelberg is 20-4 overall and 9-1 in conference play.
The Pioneers came out swinging in the first game collecting two runs on four base hits in the first inning.
Courtney Kerwood (Nashport/Tri-Valley) and
Rachel Montgomery (Massillon/Perry) each knocked in a run with a single up the middle.
Heidelberg quickly responded tallying five runs in the home half of the first inning. Aided by a Pioneer error, the Student Princes had four hits in the rally including a two-run double from Randi Kelsey.
Trailing 7-3, Marietta scored twice in the fifth and once in the seventh inning to get within a run of Heidelberg, 7-6.
Cori Long (8-1) took over in the circle for starter Paige Atterholt in the second inning. Long worked 6.0 innings and gave up four runs on eight hits to get the win. Atterholt allowed two runs on four hits in an inning of work.
Senior
Alexis O'Hair (Maumee/Maumee) (2-4) started and pitched 3.2 innings in the losing effort. O'Hair was charged with seven runs on eight hits. She walked three and struck out two.
Alison Kach (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) tossed 2.1 innings in relief and gave up one hit and three walks.
Kerwood finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Montgomery had two hits, including a double, and two RBI.
Cierra Bloom (Dennison/Claymont),
Kaitlin Klinchock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) and
Ariann Barile (Roaming Shores/Jefferson) also had two hits each as the Pioneers had 12 in the game.
In the second game, Heidelberg roughed up Pioneer starter
Lauren Larrick (Leesburg/Fairfield Local) for five runs in the first two innings. The Student Princes added four more runs in the fourth inning to push the margin to 9-0.
Larrick (3-2) pitched 1.2 innings and allowed five runs on six hits. She walked four and struck out two.
Jocelyn White (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) worked 2.1 innings and was charged with four runs, all unearned, on four hits.
Atterholt (6-2) got the complete game win for Heidelberg. She tossed 5.0 innings and scattered three base hits. Atterholt struck out three and didn't walk a batter in the shutout.
