No. 25 Wooster rolls to nonconference win over Baseball

WOOSTER, Ohio — The College of Wooster, ranked No. 25 nationally, posted a 19-8 victory over Marietta College Wednesday (April 1) afternoon in nonconference baseball action. Marietta slips to 11-8 overall, while the Fighting Scots are 15-2 on the season.

Wooster amassed 23 base hits in the game as the first four hitters in the lineup went a combined 14-for-20 at the plate. The Fighting Scots scored in all but one inning and smacked four home runs.

Frank Vance put the Scots on top with a two-run shot down the right field line in the bottom of the first. The Pioneers responded with a three-spot in the top of the second inning. Eric White (North Royalton/North Royalton) had an RBI single to center field and Christian Demko (Xenia/Bellbrook) smacked a two-run double.

The lead was short-lived as Wooster plated three in the home half of the second. Vance did the damage once again lining a double down the leftfield line that scored two.

The Etta Express battled right back retaking the lead with a three-spot in the third. Winpigler blasted a two-run home run to straight away center field, his first round tripper of the season. White picked up his second RBI on a run-scoring ground out.

Marietta starter Tyler Nieberding (Cincinnati/Elder) held the Scots in check in the third and allowed one in the fourth to tie the game, 6-6. Wooster would get rolling again with three runs in the fifth and sixth innings for a 12-6 lead.

Nieberding (2-1) took the loss working 4.2 innings. He allowed nine runs, all earned, on 12 hits. Nieberding walked three and struck out three. Four other Pioneers toed the rubber in relief.

Trailing 19-6 heading into the ninth inning, the Pioneers plated two runs in their final at bat. Ryan Hanahan (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) hit his team-leading fourth home run, a two-run shot to right field.

Dylan McCreary (1-0) got the win in relief for Wooster. McCreary tossed 3.0 shutout innings without allowing a hit. He walked one. James Usher started and worked 2.0 innings giving up three runs on three hits. The Scots used seven different pitchers in the game.

Winpigler finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI to go along with his home run. Hanahan, White and Demko each drove in two runs for the Pioneers.
