WASHINGTON, Pa. — Washington and Jefferson College blanked the No. 22 ranked Marietta College baseball team 7-0 Friday (March 27) afternoon amid the snow flurries at Ross Memorial Park. The Etta Express slips to 10-6 on the season, while the Presidents improve to 10-3 overall.
W&J sophomore Joe Vita (2-0) was in complete command on the mound surrendering just three base hits in 8.0 innings of work. He walked four and struck out five Pioneers. Tim Mulvey struck out two of three hitters he faced in the ninth inning.
The Presidents used some two-out magic to jump on top in the second inning. Marietta starter
Austin Eaton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) retired the first two batters of the inning before giving up a triple to Ryan Sciullo followed by an RBI-single from Nick Morton.
W&J again scored with two outs in the third inning. With two outs and a runner at third base, Nick Vento smacked a two-run home run over the right field fence for a 3-0 lead.
Marietta uncharacteristically committed four errors in the game. Those miscues resulted in six unearned runs for the Presidents. Eaton (2-1) worked 5.0 innings and gave up three runs, one earned, on four hits. He walked one and struck out two.
Mike Fulton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) was charged with three unearned runs in an inning of work. Fulton allowed three hits and two walks, while striking out a pair. Freshmen
Ian Luttrell (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park River Forest) and
Scott Oberhelman (Washington Twp., N.J./Old Tappan) each threw 1.0 inning of relief. Oberhelman allowed one unearned run.
Mitch Geers (West Chester/Lakota East) and
Chris Winpigler (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) each had a single for the Pioneers. Sophomore
Eric White (North Royalton/North Royalton) had a pinch hit double to account for Marietta's third hit.
Mother Nature is again causing changes to the Pioneers' schedule. Marietta's Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Baldwin Wallace University has been postponed and will be played on Sunday (March 29) at 1:00 p.m.
