Kenyon sweeps non-conference doubleheader from Softball

MARIETTA, Ohio — Kenyon College ran its winning streak to 15 games with a doubleheader sweep of Marietta College Sunday (March 22) afternoon at Marietta Field. The Ladies took game one by the score of 4-2 and then won the nightcap 8-1. Kenyon improves to 19-3 on the season, while the Pioneers fall to 5-9 overall.

Senior Maddy Stark pitched a pair of complete-games for the Ladies to reach the 10-win plateau. She is 10-2 on the season. Stark allowed two runs on six hits in game one and one run on four hits in the second game. She didn't walk a Pioneer batter in either game and had 11 strikeouts on the day.

Kenyon took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one. Stark helped herself out with a solo home run, while the Ladies' second run scored on a wild pitch. Marietta got one back in the bottom of the inning on a run-scoring double from Courtney Kerwood (Nashport/Tri-Valley).

Stark and Marietta starter Alexis O'Hair (Maumee/Maumee) settled down and posted shutout innings over the next three frames. Kenyon got to O'Hair in the fifth with two more runs. The Ladies got their first two batters on base and then received RBI hits from Chelsea Delaney and Lindsey Susolik.

O'Hair (0-1) took the loss. She worked 4.1 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits. O'Hair walked two and struck out one. Jocelyn White (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) worked the final 2.2 innings and gave up two hits, while striking out three.

The Pioneers added a run in the sixth when Kaitlin Klinchock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) reached on an error and then came around to score on a double by Ashlee Ireland (Carroll/Bloom Carroll).

Kenyon jumped on top in the first inning of the second game as well. The Ladies plated three runs as Delaney smacked a two-run double and Susolik drove in another with a sac fly.

Kenyon added a run in the fifth and put the game away with four more in the top of the seventh.

Marietta's lone run came in the second inning. Ireland led off with a double and Rachel Montgomery (Massillon/Perry) followed with an RBI single through the right side.

Alison Kach (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) (1-3) started in the circle for the Pioneers and was tagged with the loss. Kach worked 6.0 innings and gave up seven runs on seven hits. She walked three and struck out two. Kristina LaRocca (Strasburg/Strasburg Franklin) allowed one run on three hits in an inning of work.

Montgomery finished 2-for-3 as the Pioneers were limited to four hits in the game. Montgomery and Ireland each had a double.

Marietta is back in action on Wednesday (March 25) when Washington and Jefferson College visits for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference twinbill.
