Wilmington gives Women's Basketball its first loss of the season 63-61

WILMINGTON, Ohio — Amisha Herd (Zanesville, Ohio/West Muskingum) watched as her half court shot at the buzzer rimmed out giving Wilmington College a 63-61 come from behind win over Marietta College Saturday (Dec. 5) in Ohio Athletic Conference women's basketball action. The loss was Marietta's first of the season as the Pioneers fall to 7-1 overall and 1-1 in the OAC. The Quakers improve to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in league play.

After some early back and forth lead changes, Brooke Borich (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye) hit a three-pointer to put Marietta ahead 11-8 with 3:09 left in the first quarter. The Pioneers would hold the lead until late in the fourth quarter.

Marietta led 42-33 at halftime and 51-45 at the end of the third quarter. Wilmington's Emily Harman capped an 8-0 run with a layup to give the Quakers a five-point lead, 60-55, with 2:26 left on the clock.

Morgan Liedtke (Lowell, Ohio/Fort Frye) drained a three-ball with 56 seconds left to cut the deficit to two, 61-59. Brittaney Jefferson sank a pair of free throws pushing it back to a four-point margin. The Pioneers refused to go away as Herd scored on a layup and then Marietta forced a Quaker turnover setting up Herd for the half court shot at the buzzer.

Herd led all scorers with 17 points. Borich added 10 points, while Corrie Burkhardt (Zanesville, Ohio/Philo) garbbed a game-high 14 rebounds. Ashley Frasure (Logan, Ohio/Logan) notched six more blocked shots. Burkhardt and Liedtke chipped in with eight points each.

Mary Moyer led Wilmington with 16 points and 10 boards. Harman came off the bench to score 11 points and grab five caroms, while Jefferson finished with nine points and eight rebounds.

For the game, Marietta shot 33.3% (23-of-69) from the floor, 20.8% (5-of-24) from three-point range and 71.4% (10-of-14) at the line. Wilmington was 21-of-58 (36.2%) from the floor, 4-of-19 (21.1%) behind the arc and 17-of-27 (63.0%) at the line.

Marietta edged the Quakers on the glass, 45-42. The Pioneers turned the ball over 14 times, while Wilmington committed 16 turnovers.
