MARIETTA, Ohio — Senior
Eddy Grenert (Wooster, Ohio/Triway) notched his second double-double of the season leading Marietta College to an 81-72 Ohio Athletic Conference win over visiting Wilmington College Saturday (Dec. 5) in Ban Johnson Arena. The Pioneers improve to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the OAC. Wilmington falls to 1-5 on the season and 0-2 in the OAC.
Wilmington brought a roster full of freshmen and sophomores into Ban Johnson Arena and the Quakers' youthful exuberance gave the Pioneers all they could handle. The game featured 13 ties and 13 lead changes as neither team led by more than nine points.
Zach McCorkle scored on a layup with 8:33 left in the game to give Wilmington the lead, 62-61. Marietta responded by scoring the next eight points to go ahead by seven, 69-62, with just over five minutes left on the clock.
The Quakers managed to get within three points a couple of times in the waning minutes. Marietta converted six of seven free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
Grenert led all scorers with 19 points and pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds.
Dillon Young (Laurelville, Ohio/Logan Elm) scored 16 points and
A.J. Edwards (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) added 15 points and eight boards.
Anthony Wallace (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School) came off the bench to score a career-best 14 points.
McCorkle led the Quakers with 18 points and seven rebounds. Christian Jones finished in double figures with 17 points.
Marietta shot 52.6% (30-of-57) from the floor, 37.5% (6-of-16) behind the arc and 65.2% (15-of-23) at the charity stripe. The Quakers were 27-of-64 (42.2%) from the floor, 9-of-22 (40.9%) from three-point range and 9-of-18 (50.0%) at the line.
The Pioneers outrebounded Wilmington 40-33. Marietta turned the ball over 13 times, while the Quakers committed 11 turnovers.
