Men's Basketball claims Wooster Tournament title with 72-57 win over the Scots

WOOSTER, Ohio — No. 8 ranked Marietta College downed the College of Wooster by the score of 72-57 Wednesday (Dec. 30) to win the 53rd annual E.M. "Mose" Hole/Wooster Kiwanis Classic. The Pioneers finish the 2015 portion of their schedule with a 10-2 overall record. The Fighting Scots fall to 6-4 on the season.

Wooster took an early 8-3 advantage and led for all but a few seconds of the first half. The Scots led by as many as nine points in the opening period and took a 33-32 lead into halftime.

The Fighting Scots scored the first five points of the second period before Marietta answered with six in a row to tie the game at 38-38 just under two minutes into the half.

Eddy Grenert (Wooster, Ohio/Triway) nailed a three-pointer to put Marietta in front 46-44 with 14:23 left in the game. The Pioneers would lead the rest of the way pushing the margin to as many as 16 points on two occasions.

Dillon Young (Laurelville, Ohio/Logan Elm) was named the Most Valuable Player after scoring 11 points and dishing out five assists. Young led the Pioneers with 20 points in yesterday's tournament opener.

A.J. Edwards (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) led all players with 19 points and nine rebounds. He blocked three shots and was named the tournament's Defensive MVP. Grenert finished with 12 points to earn all-tournament honors.

Alex Baptiste came of the bench to lead the Scots with 13 points. He also pulled down six rebounds. Dan Fanelly scored 12 points earning all-tournament honors. Josh Kipfer added 10 points and a team-best seven boards.

For the game, Marietta shot 37.7% (23-of-61) from the floor, 33.3% (10-of-30) from three-point range and 66.7% (16-of-24) at the line. Wooster was 25-of-65 (38.5%) from the floor, 4-of-19 (21.1%) behind the arc and 3-of-5 (60.0%) at the line.

Wooster outrebounded Marietta 43-39. The Pioneers forced 19 Scot turnovers and committed 13.

Marietta returns home to host Ohio Northern University on Saturday (Jan. 9). Tip off is set for 3:00 p.m. in Ban Johnson Arena.
