BEREA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's basketball team snapped an eight-game losing streak against Baldwin Wallace University with a 68-60 win Wednesday (Dec. 16) evening. The Pioneers improve to 8-2 overall and 2-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Baldwin Wallace slips to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
Both teams got off to a slow start as the Pioneers held a 9-7 lead after the first quarter. A back and forth affair, Marietta earned the biggest lead of the first half, 21-16, when
Ashley Barker (Mogadore, Ohio/Mogadore) hit a jumper midway through the second quarter. MC led 26-24 at halftime.
Marietta opened the second half with a 13-5 run extending the lead to 10 points, 39-29.
Jo Herd-Middlebrooks (Columbus, Ohio/DeSales),
Megan Dixon (Londonderry, Ohio/Vinton County) and
Brooke Borich (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye) each hit a three-pointer during the run.
Two free throws from
Shay Lett (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) with 1:21 left in the third quarter gave Marietta its biggest lead of the game, 46-35. The Pioneers finished the third period with an eight-point advantage, 46-38.
Baldwin Wallace managed to get within three points, 49-46, on a three-pointer from Alissa Munro. MC quickly pushed the margin back to double digits with an 8-0 run and then finished the game off with six straight free throws down the stretch.
Barker led Marietta with a career-high 12 points. Borich and
Morgan Liedtke (Lowell, Ohio/Fort Frye) each chipped in with 10 points. Liedtke and
Corrie Burkhardt (Zanesville, Ohio/Philo) grabbed seven rebounds apiece.
Sydney Clark paced the Yellow jackets with 12 points and seven boards. Clara Lemmon finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.
For the game, Marietta shot 41.8% (23-of-55) from the floor, 38.5% (5-of-13) from three-point range and 65.4% (17-of-26) at the free throw line. The Yellow Jackets were 18-of-57 (31.6%) from the floor, 8-of-20 (40.0%) behind the arc and 16-of-19 (84.2%) at the line.
The battle of the boards was a draw with each team pulling down 39 caroms. The Pioneers committed 13 turnovers, while BW turned the ball over 15 times. Marietta dominated the paint outscoring Baldwin Wallace 32-14 inside.
