MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's basketball team ran its season opening win streak to four games with an 83-74 victory over the College of Wooster Tuesday (Nov. 24) evening. The Pioneers are off to their best start since winning the first eight games of the 1989-90 season.
After trailing 16-15 after the first quarter, the Pioneers grabbed the lead in the second period and led 34-30 at halftime. Marietta outscored the Scots 27-15 in the third quarter to pull away en route to the win.
Freshman
Corrie Burkhardt (Zanesville, Ohio/Philo) absolutely dominated the paint on both ends of the floor. Burkhardt tallied her second double-double of the season with 20 points and 17 rebounds, both game highs. She hit 8-of-11 from the floor and pulled down nine offensive boards.
Amisha Herd (Zanesville, Ohio/West Muskingum) scored 14 points and dished out a career-high 10 assists to go along with five rebounds and five steals.
Brooke Borich (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye) hit a pair of three-pointers and finished with 12 points, as did
Jordanna Rauch (Fleming, Ohio/Warren).
Anna Gibbs led Wooster with 23 points, while Rachel Collins drained four treys and finished with 14 points and a team-best eight rebounds. Lauren hancher chipped in with 13 points and Sydney Grier added 11 points.
The Pioneers finished 34-of-75 (45.3%) from the floor, 5-of-18 (27.8%) behind the arc and 10-of-17 (58.8%) at the line. Wooster shot 41.8% (23-of-55) from the floor, 59.1% (13-of-22) from three-point range and 75.0% (15-of-20) at the line.
Thanks in large part to Burkhardt, Marietta dominated the glass outrebounding Wooster 51-29. The Pioneers committed 13 turnovers, while the Scots turned the ball over 16 times.
Marietta hosts the 31st annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 28-29). The Pioneers play Hiram at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday followed by Case Western versus Rose-Hulman at 8:00 p.m. Sunday features the consolation game at 1:00 p.m. and the championship at 3:00 p.m.
