MARIETTA, Ohio — Heidelberg University scored on its first nine possessions as the Student Princes downed Marietta College 63-28 Saturday (Oct. 24) afternoon at Don Drumm Stadium. Heidelberg improves to 3-4 overall and 3-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Pioneers fall to 1-6 overall and 1-5 in the OAC.
The Heidelberg offense wasted no time in finding the end zone. In their nine first half scoring drives, the Student Princes' average time of possession was just 1:19.
Bryan Lacey scored HU's first two touchdowns on runs of seven yards and 34 yards. He would go on to score four rushing touchdowns and finished the game with 207 yards on 16 carries.
While Lacey was providing the ground attack, quarterback Tyler Stoyle was piloting the aerial assault. Stoyle threw fro 226 yards and five touchdowns. He completed 16-of-21 attempts. Tony Morris caught two of the TD's including a 51-yard bomb in the second quarter.
Marietta used a little trickeration to get on the board in the first quarter. Wide receiver
Alex Smith (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield) took a pitch in the backfield and threw a perfect strike to
Darnell Clemm (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) for an 18-yard touchdown.
Jimmy Embrescia (Northfield, Ohio/Nordonia) added the point after.
Heidelberg led 35-7 after the first quarter and took a 63-14 lead into halftime.
Roger Bush led Marietta's offense with 152 yards rushing on 24 carries and two touchdowns. Bush scored on a two-yard run in the second quarter and a five-yard run in the fourth.
Pioneer quarterback
Lucas Havens (Granville Summit, Pa./Troy Area) completed 6-of-20 passes for 138 yards. He was picked off once. The final Marietta score came on a three-yard run from reserve running back
Christopher Dowell (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) with 1:00 left in the game.
Defensively, the Pioneers were led by middle linebacker
Daryl DeWindt (Lilburn, Ga./Meadowcreek) who finished with 13 tackles including two for a loss.
Tonio McElveen (Missouri City, Texas/Hightower) and
Dalton Secrest (Beallsville, Ohio/Beallsville) each had nine tackles.
