COLUMBUS, Ohio — Capital University outscored Marietta College 7-0 over the final 56 seconds to defeat the Pioneers 83-77 Wednesday (Jan. 14) evening in women's basketball action. Marietta falls to 5-9 overall and 1-6 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Capital improves to 7-7 overall and 3-4 in the conference.
Senior
Heather Booth (Newport/Frontier) led five Pioneers in double figures with 18 points and seven rebounds.
Jordanna Rauch (Fleming/Warren) scored 13 off the bench, while
Brooke Borich (Beverly/Fort Frye) hit three from long range and finished with 12 points.
Ashley Frasure (Logan/Logan) chipped in with 11 points sinking all five of her shot attempts and
Candice Alexander (Fairborn/Fairborn) notched 10 points.
Shelby Sheets paced the Crusaders with 16 points. Chelsea Pla and Nina Napolitano each scored 14 points, while Kristen Thompson and Simonne Gage finished with 12 points apiece.
Marietta scored the first four points of the game and held on to a small lead until midway through the first half. Borich hit a three-pointer to knot the score at 33 with 2:34 left in the period only to see Capital finish the half on a 9-2 run to lead 42-35 at the break.
The Crusaders came out of the intermission on fire and pushed the lead to 17 points, 54-37, with 16:37 left in the game. A 10-0 run by the Pioneers cut the margin to three, 57-54, at the 9:50 mark and then another Borich trey pulled MC even at 65 three minutes later.
Capital managed to keep from falling behind until Rauch nailed a three-pointer for a 77-76 Pioneer lead with 56 seconds left. Pla was fouled on Capital's next possession and sank two free throws putting the Crusaders back in front. CU would connect on five of six throws in the final 11 seconds to secure the win.
For the game, Marietta was 29-of-59 (49.2%) from the floor, 8-of-16 (50.0%) from three-point range and 11-of-17 (71.4%) at the line. Capital shot 50.0% (30-of-60) from the floor, 45.5% (5-of-11) behind the arc and 85.7% (18-of-21) at the line.
Capital outrebounded the Pioneers 35-27. Marietta turned the ball over 16 times, while the Crusaders committed 14 turnovers.
