Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Young's career day propels Men's Basketball over Ohio Northern 72-62

ADA, Ohio — Freshman Dillon Young (Laurelville/Logan Elm) hit six three-pointers and scored a career-best 18 points to lead No. 9 Marietta College to a 72-62 road win over Ohio Northern University Saturday (Jan. 10) afternoon.

The Pioneers remain perfect at 13-0 on the season equaling the 2010-11 team with the best start in program history. Marietta remains atop the Ohio Athletic Conference standings with a 6-0 mark. Ohio Northern slips to 6-7 overall and 1-5 in the OAC.

Four of Marietta's five starters scored double figures led by Young's 18 points.  Young was 6-of-10 from three-point range and dished out four assists. Senior Garrett Stephenson (West Milton/Milton-Union) finished with 14 points seven rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.

Juniors RaNeal Ewing (Westerville/Dublin Scioto) and Eddy Grenert (Wooster/Triway) chipped in with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Grenert grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

Isaiah Roux scored 12 points to lead Ohio Northern. Joey Hurless was the only other Polar Bear in double figures with 11 points. ONU struggled on the glass as Devon Allen and Jack Ellerhorst had four rebounds each to lead the Polar Bears.

Marietta raced out to a 12-2 lead as five different Pioneers hit shots in the early going. The Polar Bears answered with a 16-2 run to claim an 18-14 lead with 10:59 left in the first half. But the Pioneers finished the half on a 14-4 run to lead 41-32 at the break.

Any hopes of an ONU comeback were stymied by Marietta's 56% shooting percentage in the second half. The Polar Bears cut the lead to seven but could get no closer. Marietta led by double digits for most of the period and pushed the margin to as many as 18 points.

The Pioneers dominated the glass outrebounding ONU 37-24. Ohio Northern took good care of the basketball committing only seven turnovers, while Marietta turned the ball over 16 times.

For the game, Marietta was 29-of-55 (52.7%) from the floor, 10-of-23 (43.5%) from three-point range and 4-of-5 (80.0%) at the free throw line. Ohio Northern shot 43.1% (25-of-58) from the floor, 26.3% (5-of-19) behind the arc and 70.0% (7-of-10) at the line.

After playing nine of their last 10 games on the road, the Pioneers are back in action in Ban Johnson Arena on Wednesday (Jan. 14) for a 7:30 p.m. game against Capital University.
