Box Score 2 LEXINGTON, Va. — The Marietta College volleyball team lost its first two games at the Washington and Lee Invitational Friday (Sept. 5) afternoon. The Pioneers opened with a 3-0 loss to Roanoke and the dropped a 3-2 thriller against the host school.
Roanoke (5-0 overall) posted set scores of 26-24, 25-22 and 25-18. Middle blocker
Shauntiel Oliver-Smith (Elyria/Elyria) had 13 kills to lead the Pioneer attack. Juniors
Kennedy Clyde (Chagrin Falls/Hawken School) and
Devin Walter (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) added nine and eight kills, respectively.
Clyde recorded 10 digs, while Walter had a pair of blocks. Libero
Mallory Vodopich (Canton/Massillon Perry) posted a match-high 13 digs. Senior setter
Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North) led all players with 32 assists, while junior
Chloe Janson (Lawrenceburg, Ind./East Central) had a match-high five blocks.
In the second match of the day, Washington and Lee (4-1 overall) recorded set scores of 25-16, 17-25, 25-13, 25-27 and 15-12 to escape with the win. Marietta led 10-8 in the fifth set before W&L scored three straight points to take the lead 11-10 en route to the victory.
Oliver-Smith gain led the Pioneers with 13 kills. Freshman
Erica Denallo (Independence/Independence) had 12 kills and a team-high 20 digs. Walter added nine kills, while Janson had eight kills and five blocks. Mauer dished out 41 assists.
Marietta wraps up play in the Washington & Lee Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 6) with two matches. The Pioneers play Birmingham-Southern College at 10:30 a.m. and Maryville College at 1:00 p.m.
