Volleyball posts pair of 3-0 victories

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College posted a pair of 3-0 win in the BSN Sports River City Volleyball Classic Saturday (Sept. 27) afternoon in Ban Johnson Arena. The Pioneers improve to 6-11 on the season.

Marietta defeated Kenyon College (2-14 overall) 25-20, 25-19, 25-21 and Case Western Reserve University (10-5 overall) 25-17, 27-25 and 25-18.

Freshman Erica Denallo (Independence/Independence) led the Pioneers against Kenyon. Denallo finished with 14 kills and a .355 attack percentage. Juniors Chloe Janson (Lawrenceburg, Ind./East Central) and Shauntiel Oliver-Smith (Elyria/Elyria) had nine and eight kills, respectively.

Janson, named the tournament's co-defensive most valuable player, dominated the net with five blocks.

Libero Mary Ervin (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) controlled the back line for Marietta with a match-high 16 digs. Senior setter Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North) added 13 digs to go along with her 36 assists. Defensive specialist Julia Moskaluk (Copley/Revere) added 10 digs.

Prior to playing the Pioneers, Case Western knocked off perennial Ohio Athletic Conference power Otterbein in five sets. Marietta wasted little time taking advantage of its fresh legs and jumped out to an early 13-6 lead in the first set.

Marietta's offensive attack was nearly perfect in the first set collecting 14 kills against just one error for a .448 attack percentage. Case Western struggled committing nine errors for a -.029 attack percentage.

For the match, junior Devin Walter (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) led a balanced Pioneer attack with 12 kills and a .435 attack percentage. Oliver-Smith and Janson each had nine kills, while Denallo finished with eight.

Janson and Mauer were a formidable pairing at the net. Janson blocked seven Case attacks, while Mauer had five blocks. Mauer also dished out a match-high 32 assists and chipped in with 13 digs. Ervin and Mosklauk recorded 19 and 18 digs, respectively.
