Heidelberg outlasts Volleyball in five sets

Box Score MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College volleyball team lost its Ohio Athletic Conference opener to Heidelberg University by the score of 3-2 Friday (Sept. 27) evening in Ban Johnson Arena. The Student Princes posted set scores of 23-25, 26-24, 25-23, 21-25 and 15-7.

Marietta (4-11 overall, 0-1 OAC) scored the final six points of the first set to come from four points down to win 25-23. Heidelberg (8-10, 1-1 OAC) took the second and third sets, both of which were tied 20-20, with key kills from setter Stephanie Romie.

The Pioneers led the fourth set most of the way using a 6-3 run midway through the set to take control. After losing the first point of the fifth set, Heidelberg tallied the next five points and never looked back taking the deciding set, 15-7.

Freshman Erica Denallo (Independence/Independence) led the Pioneer attack with a career-high 17 kills. Fellow rookie Madison Taggart (Milford/Milford) also posted a career-high with 13 kills. Taggart finished with a .353 attack percentage and a pair of blocks.

Junior middle blocker Chloe Janson (Lawrenceburg, Ind./East Central) added 10 kills and three blocks. Junior Devin Walter (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) had three blocks and eight kills. Senior setter Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North) set a season-high with 46 assists.

Along the back line, junior libero Mary Ervin (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) notched 31 digs. Mauer had 23 digs and defensive specialist Julia Moskaluk (Copley/Revere) added 20 digs. Mallory Vodopich (Canton/Massillon Perry) and Kennedy Clyde (Chagrin Falls/Hawken School) provided additional offense at the service line with four and three aces, respectively.

Marietta hosts the annual BSN Sports River City Tournament Saturday (Sept. 27). The Pioneers play Kenyon College at 12:00 p.m. and Case Western Reserve University at 4:30 p.m.
