Box Score MARIETTA, Ohio — Denison University converted a penalty kick in the first half to defeat Marietta College 1-0 Wednesday (Sept. 24) in men's soccer action at Marietta Field. The Big Red improved to 3-3-1 on the season while the Pioneers dropped to 2-5 overall.
Denison sent a corner kick into the six-yard box where Pioneer senior
Boyd Kirk (Akron/Green) was whistled for a handball. The call resulted in a red card for Kirk and a penalty kick for the Big Red. Jake Girardot converted the penalty for his second goal of the season.
Trailing by a goal and playing a man down, Marietta put in a valiant effort but could not get the equalizer. Denison limited MC to only two shots in the second half.
Freshman
Tyler Sholl (Johnstown/Big Walnut) made his first career start in goal for the Pioneers. Sholl made five first half saves and finished with six for the match. Jack Thomas posted the clean sheet in net for Denison making three saves.
For the match, Denison outshot the Pioneers 14-8 and held a 9-6 advantage in corner kicks.
