WESTERVILLE, Ohio — Otterbein University's defense set the tone early with a goal line stand as the Cardinals blanked Marietta College 20-0 Saturday (Sept. 20) afternoon on Homecoming in Memorial Stadium. The Pioneers are 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Otterbein is 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the OAC.
Marietta recovered a fumble on the Otterbein 43-yard line early in the first quarter and marched to the Cardinal two. The Pioneers had first and goal and were stopped on four straight running plays by the Otterbein defense.
Otterbein fumbled the ball away four times in the game but Marietta failed to capitalize on the Cardinals generosity. The Pioneers managed 285 yards of total offense, 142 on the ground and 184 in the air.
The Cardinals got on the board in the second quarter. Quarterback Brick Davis scampered 16 yards for the score to cap a seven play, 58-yard drive. Otterbein took the 7-0 lead into halftime.
Otterbein added a touchdown in the third when Davis hit tight end Chad McCray on a three-yard touchdown pass for a 14-0 lead with 10:27 left in the period. Kicker Alaina Gaither added a pair of fourth quarter field goals for the 20-0 lead.
Marietta dodged several bullets in the second half. Otterbein drove the ball inside the Pioneer 10-yard line four times and settled for the two field goals.
Junior quarterback
Lucas Havens (Granville Summit, Pa./Troy Area) completed 17-of-30 passes for 143 yards. He was picked off twice. Senior Tannon Roberst caught six passes for 73 yards.
Freshman
Nick O'Neal (Mont Belvieu, Texas/Barbers Hill) had 13 carries for 63 yards. Fellow rookie Masai Mcdaniel gained 30 yards on 13 carries, while sophomore
Thomas Hinkle (Fredericktown, Ohio/Fredericktown) had 31 yards on just two carries.
Marietta plays at No. 3 ranked Mount Union on Saturday (Sept. 27) at 7:00 p.m. The Purple Raiders will be celebrating the 100th birthday of Mount Union Stadium, the oldest college football stadium in Ohio.
