Volleyball wins five-set thriller over Ohio Christian

Box Score MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College came from behind to post a thrilling five-set victory over Ohio Christian University Tuesday (Sept. 2) evening for the Pioneers' first win of the season. Marietta improves to 1-4 overall, while the Trailblazers fall to 2-3 on the season.

The Pioneers started off strong winning the first set 25-16. Ohio Christian responded with a 25-15 win in the second set and then slipped by Marietta 27-25 in the third.

Ohio Christian's attack went ice cold in the fourth set and MC took advantage easily winning 25-16 to force the fifth and deciding set. In the final frame, The Trailblazers jumped out to an early lead and maintained it through most of the set. OCU was two points away from victory leading 13-10.

Marietta battled back on the arm of junior Devin Walter (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) as the Pioneers closed the match on a 7-2 run. Walter put away four of her match-high 20 kills during MC's clinching run.

In addition to Walter's kills, the Pioneers dominated the net stuffing three Trailblazer attacks. Junior middle blocker Shauntiel Oliver-Smith (Elyria/Elyria) put the exclamation point on the victory with a solo block to end the match. She finished with five blocks on the night.

Junior Kennedy Clyde (Chagrin Falls/Hawken School) had 13 kills, 19 digs and three service aces. Classmate Chloe Janson (Lawrenceburg, Ind./East Central), playing in her first match of the season, finished with 11 kills and three blocks. Freshman Madison Taggart (Milford/Milford) also posted three blocks.

Senior Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North) and sophomore Julia Moskaluk (Copley/Revere) split the setting duties. Mauer recorded 28 assists, while Moskaluk dished out 22. Sophomore Mallory Vodopich (Canton/Massillon Perry) had a match-high 26 digs from the libero position.

Marietta travels to Washington and Lee University for four matches this weekend. The Pioneers play Roanoke College on Friday (Sept. 5) at 2:30 p.m. and the host school at 5:00 p.m.
