Women's Soccer battles to a 1-1 draw at Waynesburg

Box Score WAYNESBURG, Pa. — Marietta College and Waynesburg University battled to a 1-1 double overtime draw Wednesday (Sept. 17) evening in women's soccer action.  The Pioneers move to 0-6-1 on the season, while Waynesburg is 3-1-2 overall.

Marietta outshot the Yellow Jackets 8-4 in the first half but neither team could find the back of the net. Waynesburg keeper Ciara Scott made five saves in the first period to keep the Pioneers off the scoreboard.

Waynesburg turned up the pressure on offense in the second half taking 19 shots to just three for the Pioneers. Marietta freshman keeper Rebecca Tenney (Pepper Pike/Orange) rose to the challenge turning away nine Jacket shots in the period.

The Yellow Jackets drew first blood with a goal in the 77th minute. Melanie Byler knocked one in off a corner kick to put Waynesburg in front, 1-0. 78 seconds later Marietta sophomore Layne Archer (Duncan Falls/Philo) tallied the equalizer. It was Archer's second goal of the season.

Neither team mounted much of an attack in the overtime periods. Waynesburg took three shots in extra time, while the Pioneers took two. For the match, the Yellow Jackets outshot Marietta 26-13. MC had eight corner kicks to Waynesburg's five.

Scott finished with seven saves in net for the Jackets and Tenney notched a career-high 15 saves for Marietta.
